Here I used photoshop to merge multiple stills from the Weird Science movie, I did this to get the difference between them which resulted in an image of the set with no actors. I could use this image as a reference to create the desk.
This is a rough sketch of the desk to get an idea of exactly what i need to make for it. (Above)
(Right) These are my measurements for the desk, I couldn't get actual measurements for it so I used my own desk as a starting point for reference then I could figure out the hight of things on the desk which gave me proportionally accurate measurements to scale to 1:20.
Then I started making the desk. I drew out all of the pieces of the desk in 1:20 on white card then I could cut them all out to put together.
This is all of the pieces of the desk cut and stuck together. I think I nailed the proportions!
I started painting the desk and realised I should of done that before glueing as the desk was very flimsy and I had to be very careful so it wouldn't come apart.
I also started making the chair. This was definitely the hardest part as the card was so so thin and the chair is very small. MOst of the time I had to use tweezers as it was so microscopic to work with. I also used my bedroom chair as a size reference for this chair.
After paining the desk I made lots of small objects like books, CRT monitors, records and boxes to put on the desk. I love how the records turned out I think they look awesome leaning against the speaker. I think I probably should have made more things to go on the shelf as it feels a bit empty.
This is how I photographed the model to use as the front of the toy packaging.
I will need to use photoshop to fix up the image to make it look more presentable and period accurate.
I used white card as a seamless but will need to fix up the image in photoshop.
This is the image after touching up, adjusting colours and fixing the backdrop.
I then used that image and added lots of adjustments on photoshop to make it look like a 1980s advertisement photo. I used a Kodachrome emulator I created last summer for the colours, added abbreviation, grain, dust, and a slight vignette and I think it looks very believable!
This is a mood board I created to get an idea of how 1980s toy packaging looked so I could design mine. I particularly like the transformers on on the top right.
This is the final design for the packaging, I used photoshop and illustrator to create it. I managed to find the font they used for the movie logo so I was able to use it on the box which I think looks great.
This is the final design/3D mockup of the box. I absolutely love how it turned out and I think it looks so believable. If I had more time I would make the actual box with an insert for the model to go inside. I'd also probably 3D a lot of the model next time as toys were almost always wood or plastic back then.
